RMALA has resolved to offer information to our community on a regular basis for the next few months about the nuts and bolts of our business. We will try to answer questions that many of us have, particularly in what feels like a time of change and uncertainty, not just in our business but in Hollywood generally.
In watching the unity of the writers during their strike, we were inspired by their strong sense of community. This kind of unity and community starts with everyone having access to the same information about our business and work environment, and also feeling that we can freely ask the important or difficult questions which concern us all.
Beginning later in March, RMALA will be sponsoring a series of small meetings in living rooms and small venues around the city. We will be offering new ways for you to submit questions that can be part of the agenda for each meeting.
When you RSVP for a small meeting you will be able to include any questions you would like to have addressed in the meeting. In addition, at the beginning of each meeting, anonymous forms will be made available for you to submit additional questions. The questions raised in the small groups will guide us in planning future larger symposiums on specific topics. Please take these opportunities to let us know what areas you as members of this community want to know more about.
In the coming months, keep an eye out for a series of e-mails which will address a number of topics of vital concern to us all such as...
What are "one-off" contracts, and how do they affect us? How does a contract go from a twinkle in the eye of a composer to a session (union or not)? What is the structure of the AFM and what is the role of the RMA and other player conferences within that structure? What are secondary markets based upon and what impact does digital technology (downloads, streaming etc.) have upon the future of special payments and our contracts? What are our options as a community in this time of change, with motion picture contract negotiations on the horizon?
If you know people not in the RMALA database who might be interested in this kind of information, please send us their e-mail addresses And, of course, at any time, questions can be sent through the RMALA website or addressed to Marc Sazer, Sarah Thornblade, Mark Graham, Jennie Hansen, Jay Rosen or Bill Reichenbach (the RMALA education committee).
When we get our meetings scheduled and put the word out, please participate! If you would like to host a meeting, let one of our education committee members know - we would like to have meetings in as many different parts of the city as possible.
